However, I know that some drummers prefer other, similar heads, and I'd like them to talk me out of the Remo Ambassadors if they care to before I commit. I therefore suppose I'll just buy coated Remo Ambassadors and be done with it. Maybe if owned these different heads and played them myself for awhile I'd develop a preference, but online videos aren't telling me much. Unfortunately, when I watch videos comparing these similar heads, I confess to not hearing much of a difference among them. However, there are a lot of similar heads on the market these days, some from competing companies and some that even Remo makes to compete with itself. Heck, they've been around forever (and I used to play them forever ago too).

Pop would work though.Īnyway, I just want to go with traditional single-ply coated heads, and the Remo Ambassadors seem the go-to option. I do like jazz and am so-so at it, but jazz gigs are almost as scarce as polka bands (which I can play too). If Elvis or an age peer of his didn't do it, I won't either. Actually, I sensibly pass on even bands playing Zeppelin, much less any more progressive rock or whatever. (So far it's just jamming and talking with players.) My background is mostly country, and I'm trying to find a front person to put together a country band, though the market "demand" for me (insofar as there is one) is old rock, blues, that kind of thing. Which I think would be fine for any style of music I might actually be called upon to play. I'm pretty sure that I want the coated single ply sound. I understand the appeal of that sound, but it's not the sound I want now.

Also, in times past as well as in current jam sessions, I played (and in the jams am playing) one or another version of double-ply clear heads. On the zillions of head comparison videos, I tend to prefer coated single ply heads. My strong leaning is to go "old school" and stick with coated single ply heads. While there are no rules and I can entertain the possibility of using different heads for different drums, I kind of want to keep it simple and put the same heads on all the drums. For the most part I like the stock heads-the drums sound pretty good-but a couple of the heads now need to be replaced and everyone recommends upgrading to better heads anyway. To get back into drumming a little after a long hiatus, I bought a set of Gretsch Catalina Maples with stock heads (coated Evans, albeit likely inferior quality to regular Evans heads).
